Science (and box office receipts) have proven that girls love rom-coms. It’s also proven that most rom-coms make boys vomit.
So to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the spirit of sharing and compromise here are five rom-coms that couples can enjoy together…
1) Say Anything… (1989)
Still Cameron Crowe’s best film, still John Cusack’s best performance. It’s hilarious in a fanastic Lloyd Dobler deadpan way and it’s got that scene where he holds up the boombox outside her window.
2) Annie Hall (1977)
Woody Allen retells his very real relationship and break up with Diane Keaton in non-linnear narrative style. The “what they’re actually thinking” subtitles scene is now legend, and for some reason the bit with the lobsters breaks my heart.
3) When Harry Met Sally (1989)
The best Woody Allen film that Woody Allen had nothing to do with. It’s famous for the “I’ll have what she’s having” orgasm scene, but the interspersed interviews with elderly couples are sweet as you like, and it’s great to see Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan’s relationship unfold slowly over time.
4) Groundhog Day (1993)
Grumpy Bill Murray really gets to know Andie McDowell when he repeats the same day over and over. And over. Plus Ned Ryerson totally deserves that punch in the face.
5) Four Weddings & A Funeral (1994)
Andie McDowell ruins the entire film when she says “Is it raining, I hadn’t noticed”, and the film now has a reputation for being a lot more soppy than it actually was. But see it again and it’s hularious, and even a little dark. Plus it opens with Grant dropping the eff-bomb a thousand times in a row.
