In January of 2005, after nearly two years of touring, Story of the Year headed back in to the studio to write and record their second full-length album. By that summer, they had completed what proved to be a more focused, mature record, representing a new level of musicianship and songwriting for the band. They called it In The Wake Of Determination. Immediately after finishing, they began touring in support of the record, which was released in October of 2005. Touring for In The Wake Of Determination brought Story of the Year to new fans, new places, and some of the biggest, most intense crowds to date. As always, cameras rolled and captured the experiences along the way. Our Time Is Now is the story of those two years. It’s a two-part feature including a never-before-seen look into the band’s writing and recording process, and a home video style documentary of life on the road.

April 30th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Documentary, Movie News, Movies, On-demand, Online Videos, The Movie Biz

Filmmakers announce the official online debut of Blues by the Beach, a film documenting the Mikes Place bombing in Tel Aviv, Israel in April of 2003. Set to coincide with the fifth memorial of the tragic event, and the 60th Anniversary of Israel, the film is available via a new video streaming pay per view technology.

Fate brought filmmakers together in Israel in April of 2003. Setting out to make a documentary film about a popular international blues bar by the beach in Tel Aviv called Mikes Place, the filmmakers peaceful good time was abruptly interrupted when harsh reality struck Mikes Place. On April 30, 2003, two British Nationals executed a suicide bombing right next door to the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv at Mikes Place, while an American producer and his crew were filming what was intended as a lighthearted documentary about the bar staff and their multi-ethnic patrons. The film crew was on the scene and captured the before, during and the aftermath of the incident; this gripping footage has since aired around the world. In remembrance of the victims, survivors and heroes of Mike’s Place, on the five-year memorial of the bombing, Blues by the Beach, has its official online premiere. The award-winning documentary is not distributed on DVD or broadcast on television. It is available online exclusively through new streaming video technology from VIVIDAS in a pay-per-view format that entitles viewers to three screenings for a one month period.  Once purchased, any of the screenings may then be emailed to friends and family as gifts. Screenings can be viewed on computer in vibrant full-screen mode, and can also connect to television by using a cable.

Why distribute in this manner? American Jack Baxter, the film’s producer, who was seriously injured in the attack, has this to say: Everybody should see this film. With this new video streaming technology, anyone online anywhere, with any connection speed, can see a film that is truly unique in the history of documentary filmmaking. There are no downloads, no installation of programs and no waiting. Within seconds Blues is ready to play. And you don’t have to be a computer whiz. Listen,” says Baxter, nobody expects that swords will turn into plowshares overnight in the Middle East, but maybe, just maybe Blues by the Beach can help jump-start the process a bit. That’s why we made the film in the first place, and that’s why this is the way to get it seen around the world everywhere online.

The online premiere of the award-winning documentary film coincides with both the fifth memorial of the tragic bombing depicted in the film and the60th Anniversary Celebration of Israel Film festivals in the U.S., Canada and Europe have lauded Blues by the Beach.” Pulitzer Prize winning playwright and movie director David Mametcallsi a very, very important film. It ranks along with One Day In September as an actual, undeniable presentation of the unmitigated horror of terrorism.

For more information about the film and how to purchase viewings at the film’s website and online cinema, visit “Blues by the Beach.”

Cannes Opening with ‘Blindness’

April 30th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Actors, Book-to-Movie, Festivals, Movie News, Movies, The Movie Biz

blindness1.jpg

Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles’ “Blindness” is the opening film for the Cannes Film Festival on May 14th.   I just saw the trailer at Hollywood Reporter and it eerie.

“Blindness,” the English-language adaptation of Jose Saramago’s best-selling mystery novel, stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover and Gael Garcia Bernal in a story about a city struck by a strange blindness epidemic.

Here’s what else is lined up for the festival. Also added to the festival lineup was pair of Competition titles. Laurent Cantet’s “Entre Les Murs” will be the third Gallic title in the section, while James Gray’s “Two Lovers,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow, also will vie for this year’s Palme d’Or.

Cantet’s “Murs” is an adaptation of prolific French author Francois Begaudeau’s novel about a French teacher at a secondary school in a rough neighborhood.

Barry Levinson’s “What Just Happened,” starring Robert De Niro, will close the festival May 25.

De Niro will serve double duty on closing night. In addition to presenting the Levinson film, the actor will bestow the Palme d’Or on the festival’s top film.

Rounding out the Sean Penn-chaired jury are two new members: French actress Jeanne Balibar and Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian author and director of last year’s animated Cannes hit “Persepolis.”

Steve McQueen’s “Hunger” will open Un Certain Regard on May 15.

Cannes to Feature Surveillance

April 30th, 2008 by eoin ofaolain in Directors, Movies, horror

Just when you thought cheap horrors were dying away….

Jennifer Lynch’s latest film Surveillance will be screened during the Cannes Film Festival. I’m not exactly sure why, having seen the trailer above.

The film tells the tale of an FBI agent on the trail of a murderer. He watches interviews conducted with three witnesses of a certain incident: a junkie, a cop, and a little girl. The only problem is that their stories seem to vary wildly. Dealing with police brutality and serial killers, the film in principle seems like a cross between The Hitcher and Rashomon. The trailer attempts to throw in some pseudo-intellectualism with the tagline “Truth is illusion”, but it doesn’t really stick. The film really looks like another run-of-the-mill Saw-wannabe with a dash of CSI thrown in for the mix.

It pains me to say it, but I suspect nepotism has a factor in the making of this movie. For Jennifer Lynch is the daughter of David Lynch, the director of great dream-like mysteries such as Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks. Jennifer’s last film was Boxing Helena, which was unanimously slated by critics at the time, and boasts a miserable 3.8 score on IMDB. This film doesn’t look much better, an off-aim idea that probably won’t sustain its 100 minutes, and was funded by Daddy’s reputation (indeed, the trailer tries to sell itself with the blatent message “Executive Producer: David Lynch”). Although Jennifer is flesh and blood, it seems as if talent isn’t hereditary.

    ‘Burn’ Opens Venice

April 29th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Directors, Festivals, Movie News, The Movie Biz

    burnafterreading2.jpg

“Burn After Reading” by the Coen Brothers opens the 65th Venice Film Festival.

As usual “Burn” is a dark spy comedy,  and stars Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich and Tilda Swinton.

If you can make the festival, the film comes to the U.S. in September.

There has been a lot of buzz about “Burn,” which the Coens wrote and directed. The story pivots on an ousted CIA official, Malkovich, whose memoir falls into the hands of two Washington, D.C., gym employees, who decide to attempt to exploit their find.

”Burn” marks the second consecutive year a film from the Working Title stable opens Venice, following “Atonement” last year.

    ‘Girlfriend’ Soderbergh’s Low-Buget Film

April 29th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Directors, Drama, Dvd, Fantasy, Idle Speculation, Movie News, Movies, TV, The Movie Biz

    soderbergh1.jpg

Even though Steven Soderbergh next project is with Matt Damon called “The Informant,” the innovative director is setting up his next film, “The Girlfriend Experience,” a feature that centers on the world of prostitution from the vantage point of a $10,000-a-night call girl.

“Girlfriend” is the second film after of his six picture deal he made to direct low-budget films distributed simultaneously in theatrical, on cable TV and on DVD. His first film was “Bubble.”

Soderbergh prefers an adult film actress versus star power to play the lead role. “Bubble” used mainly non-pros.

As some may recall Soderbergh breakthrough film “sex, lies & videotape.”  Speculation is that “Girlfriend” will be an exploration of sexual relationships like “sex, lies & videotape.”

Another speculation is that, like “Bubble,” “Girlfriend” will be shot partly improvisational by working out the beats of the film. “Girlfriend” is predicted to be shot within 14 days this fall.

The title refers to a phenomenon in which wealthy men pay not just for the quality of a sexual encounter but also for a woman who will play the role of a perfect girlfriend. The arrangement apparently involves more intimacy than the usual prostitution relationship. It appears Soderbergh did extensive research to hit the reality of the interior look at a woman who makes $1 million a year in the business.
