Based upon Mark Millar’s explosive graphic novel series and helmed by stunning visualist director Timur Bekmambetov—creator of the most successful Russian film franchise in history, the Night Watch series—Wanted tells the tale of one apathetic nobody’s transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice.

In 2008, the world will be introduced to a hero for a new generation: Wesley Gibson.  25-year-old Wes (James McAvoy) was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known.  His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably.  Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing.  There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox (Angelina Jolie). After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad’s death by unlocking his dormant powers.  As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself.

With wickedly brilliant tutors—including the Fraternity’s enigmatic leader, Sloan (Morgan Freeman)—Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted.  But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye.  And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.

Scarlett Johansson Album of Tom Waits Covers Announced

March 6th, 2008 by admin in Actors, Celebs, Movies, Music

scarlett-sing.jpgThis has to be one of the most bizarre pieces of news I’ve heard in quite some time. Scarlett Johansson, It Girl up until last year, is going to release an album. But not just any album, a covers album. Now, this wouldn’t be too much of a surprise: Hollywood princess, after suffering a commerical and critical bomb or two, attempts to boost her popularity by releasing a album, entitled “Anywhere I Lay My Head”. However, Scarlett has made the very strange move of covering only songs by Tom Waits (although she snuck in a song she wrote herself, pathetically titled “Song for Jo”).

For those who don’t know (shame on you), Tom Waits started off his career by recording drunken jazz tunes. They were witty, moody, and cool. But soon Waits changed direction. In fact, he made his own direction, a combination of jazzy ballads and industrial stomps, eventually incorporating the occasional beat-boxing. Tom Waits is one of the most unique artists around- nothing and nobody sounds like him.

Now, Waits has been covered before, by the likes of Springsteen, Rod Stewart, and the Eagles, to varying degrees of success. But a whole record by someone who has never recorded before? The tracklisting (full details below) doesn’t help, with many of the songs picked from Waits’ later, more bizarre and thus idiosyncratic career. These songs are made unique through Waits’ throaty, cigarette-stained voice, his left-of-field production and odd instrumentation. My deepest fear is that Scarlett attempts to make them more “accessible” by recuding them to gentle jazz and R&B tunes, stripping them of everyhting that made them so distinct in the first place.

“Anywhere I Lay My Head” is out on May 20th. Tom Waits, who guards his music well, has apparently given Scarlett his seal of approval. Well, would you say no to her?

Mirren and Pesci Play Mustang Ranch Couple

March 6th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Actors, Directors, Movie News, The Movie Biz

jpesce.jpghmirren.jpgHelen Mirren and Joe Pesci plan to star together in Mirren’s husband, Taylor Hackford, film “Love Ranch.” A drama based on a true story about a couple, Joe and Sally Conforte, who owned Mustang Ranch, the first legal prostitution house in Nevada. Boxer Oscar Bonavena was gunned down in 1976 at the ranch allegedly having an affair with the madam Sally.

“Ray” was the last film Hackford directed, and he looks forward to working with his wife again. They haven’t worked together since “White Nights” in 1985. Hackford told Variety, “I’ve developed this project for a long time, and one of the things that excited me most was the chance to work again with my wife,” Hackford said. “I had to beg; she’s a very busy girl. We’d wanted to work together for some time, but she wouldn’t agree unless it was a great role, and this is a great role.” The last big role for Pesci was “Lethal Weapon 4” in 1999, although he played a small role in “The Good Shepherd.”

“Joe didn’t have any desire to work, but he was the first person I had in mind to play the husband, this former cab driver who dreamed of making prostitution legal and carved out a tiny county and convinced the local politicians,” Hackford said. “He’s playing the godfather of legalized prostitution, and it convinced Joe to jump back into the fire.”

No one on has been cast to play the fighter yet.

‘Semi-Pro’ Hit the Top at the Box Office

March 4th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Box Office

semipro.jpg

Well Ferrell’s comedy made the top spot at the box office this weekend.  “Semi-Pro” gross wasn’t that high – $15.3 million.  “Vantage Point” hung in there at second place with $13 million — not far behind.

“The Other Boleyn Girl,”  the other big opener, made fourth with $8.3 million, and modern-day fairy tale “Penelope” placed eighth with $4 million.

All in all, it appears pretty uneventful.  But, more and better movies are not far behind.

Time Magazine and George Clooney

March 4th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Actors, Celebs

george_clooney_07.jpg

I just went through a great article in Time magazine centered on the movie star, George Clooney.

“George Clooney: The Last Movie Star” reveals, quite easily, who George Clooney is.  He sounds like a great guy you would love to know.

Here is an excerpt:

”He’s a throwback to what movie stars used to be,” says Grant Heslov, who has been friends with Clooney since they met in an acting class in 1983 and is now his partner at their new film and TV production company, Smoke House. “You see him and you think, Wouldn’t that be a great life? He seems like a man’s man. He seems like you could meet him at a bar and have a chat with him and it would be easy. And all of that is true.”

I actually know someone who met him in a bar, had a chat and it was easy. They had a great evening together.

Bob Marley Feature Film In the Works

March 4th, 2008 by JK in Drama, Movie News, Movies

bob_marley_1.jpg

A  new movie about reggae legend Bob Marley is in the works. Based on the book “No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley” which was written by his wife Rita Marley:

“Bob always told me, ‘Wherever you are I will be there’ and I didn’t understand it until much later. Our lives began in a government yard in Trenchtown with hopes of reaching the world through music and through our dreams. I wrote my book to tell my story — of the dreams we shared and those days we spent living and believing in our hope. I saw it and now we get to tell it through our movie. I’ve waited a long time to tell this story, about growing up in Jamaica and meeting Bob and making our music and falling in love and making our family. All that, and all that we went through went into this. Now is that time. This is my story.” Rita said in a press release.

The Weinstein Company secured the rights to the movie which will be the first ever about the late star. Harvey Weinstein sounds very enthuastic about the film stating:

“I could not be more excited about this film and about bringing audiences around the world a true look into the delicate and dynamic lives of Rita and Bob Marley. Bob Marley was a prolific individual who has influenced and impacted the world with engaging messages he expressed through his moving and socially observant music. His voice commanded attention, it commanded compassion, and it commanded peace. He was a profound musical prophet, whose voice and words inspired generations across the world. We hope this film will resonate across all classes and creeds.”

No Wait Needed For Speed Racer at IMAX

March 4th, 2008 by JK in Action, Movie News, Movies

mach5-speed-racer.jpg

Way back in May, we told you how excited we were to see ‘Speed Racer’ adaptation to the big screen . We have great news to report on the movie directed by brains behind the Matrix Trilogy: ‘Speed Racer’ will be released at IMAX theaters May 9th, the same day as when it opens at the regular theater. The reason they are doing this is because the movie is so visually spectacular.

“Audiences will experience an incredible thrill ride when they see Speed Racer in IMAX theaters this May,” added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “Warner Bros Pictures, The Wachowski Brothers and Joel Silver are masters at telling stories specifically for the big IMAX screen, and with up to 14,000 watts of digital surround sound combined with crystal-clear, larger than life images, this movie and IMAX are made for each other.”

So if you were making plans to see the movie when it was released, it is probably a good idea to go “full throttle” and see ‘Speed Racer’ in a venue that will make the movie that much better and give you the chance to see the film how it was designed to be seen.

Watchmen’s Black Freighter Story to Appear on DVD

March 2nd, 2008 by admin in Actors, Book-to-Movie, Movies

watchmen-the-black-freighter.gifNow, this may not be much news to anyone who hasn’t read the Watchmen graphic novel, but to anyone that has…

It has been confirmed that the “Tales of the Black Freighter” story that is read throughout the events of the Watchmen story will indeed be made. Actor Gerard Butler spoke to Empire magazine about voicing the tale: “they’re going to do it in the style of a Japanese anime”.

That’s pretty good news for fans of the comic. The tale is actually a comic within the Watchmen comic, and concerns an increasingly deranged captain who chases after a phantom pirate ship he believes is on route to pillage his home-town.

This tale will not be part of the Watchmen film itself, as it does not directly relate to the principal actions of the story. In the original comics, it acted as a way of charting, and thus commenting on, one of the primary character’s decisions and reasoning throughout the main plot. While it will be nice to see it included in some form, this also indicates how difficult it will be to successfully adapt the graphic novel into a 2 hour film. The comic is made up of side-stories, back-stories, flashbacks, and metanarratives. And director Zack Synder’s last film, 300, barely had one story in total.

David Fincher to Take on “Black Hole”

March 1st, 2008 by admin in Book-to-Movie, Directors, Movies, Writers

blackhole.jpgWhat once was TV show revivals is now becoming comic book revivals. Yes, Hollywood seems keen on cracking the comic nerd market after the ridiculous success that was 300. Hell, even the French are at it, after adapting Persepolis to much critical acclaim. Now things are moving on, with almost everything Frank Miller spilt ink on becoming a movie, as well as Akira, Watchmen, etc.

And now David Fincher has signed on to direct yet another comic adaptation. This time it’s Black Hole, originally written, and drawn, by Charlie Burns. The comic is set in the 70s in which a group of teenagers contract a STD that causes strange genetic mutations. That sounds like an allegory promoting abstinence to me, but apparently it’s more like a metaphor for the awkwardness of adolescence.

Fincher is certainly an interesting choice. He has already proven that he can capture the spirit of an era in the excellent Zodiac. Plus, there was enough dry humour in Fight Club, and enough visual prowess in Panic Room to suggest that he can handle such a bizarre and humorous (I presume) idea without getting silly.

Details of the film are sketchy, although it is being written by Roger Avary, who recently penned the awful dialogue of Beowulf. In the meantime, Fincher fans can look forward to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, an F Scott Fitzgerald story starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett.
