This has to be one of the most bizarre pieces of news I’ve heard in quite some time. Scarlett Johansson, It Girl up until last year, is going to release an album. But not just any album, a covers album. Now, this wouldn’t be too much of a surprise: Hollywood princess, after suffering a commerical and critical bomb or two, attempts to boost her popularity by releasing a album, entitled “Anywhere I Lay My Head”. However, Scarlett has made the very strange move of covering only songs by Tom Waits (although she snuck in a song she wrote herself, pathetically titled “Song for Jo”).
For those who don’t know (shame on you), Tom Waits started off his career by recording drunken jazz tunes. They were witty, moody, and cool. But soon Waits changed direction. In fact, he made his own direction, a combination of jazzy ballads and industrial stomps, eventually incorporating the occasional beat-boxing. Tom Waits is one of the most unique artists around- nothing and nobody sounds like him.
Now, Waits has been covered before, by the likes of Springsteen, Rod Stewart, and the Eagles, to varying degrees of success. But a whole record by someone who has never recorded before? The tracklisting (full details below) doesn’t help, with many of the songs picked from Waits’ later, more bizarre and thus idiosyncratic career. These songs are made unique through Waits’ throaty, cigarette-stained voice, his left-of-field production and odd instrumentation. My deepest fear is that Scarlett attempts to make them more “accessible” by recuding them to gentle jazz and R&B tunes, stripping them of everyhting that made them so distinct in the first place.
“Anywhere I Lay My Head” is out on May 20th. Tom Waits, who guards his music well, has apparently given Scarlett his seal of approval. Well, would you say no to her?
