Bana Loves ‘Trek’ Movie Role

February 29th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Actors, Directors, Fantasy, Movie News, Sci-Fi, Sequels

banae.jpgtrek_1251.jpgAccording to UPI News, Australian actor and “Star Trek” fan Eric Bana said he couldn’t resist the opportunity to play a villain in the new installment of the sci-fi franchise.

“I couldn’t resist. I read it and I know (director J.J. Abrams) pretty well and there was just no way to say no; it’s just too much fun,” Bana told reporters in New York recently.

“I liked the original (show) as a kid. I loved it. I haven’t seen a lot of the movies since, but I was a fan of the original series,” the actor replied when asked if he was a “Trekkie.” “But even if I was crazy about the original series, it wouldn’t have been enough to make me sign on to a film I didn’t want to do. I just read the script and I just went, ‘That is an awesome script,’ and it’s J.J. and it’d be a good time to play a character like that. It was a very easy decision.”

Bana can now be seen playing Henry VIII in the big screen period drama “The Other Boleyn Girl.” Two sister vie for him. Oh, man.

Top 100 Italo Films

February 29th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Awards, Foreign Language, Movie News, The Movie Biz, classic

biketh.jpgLists of 100 Italo films were announced as the cultural treasures. Unveiled in Rome on Thursday, but not without controversy, until producer Grazia Volpi, according to Variety, cried out, “Where are Lina Wertmueller and Liliana Cavani?”

Volpi has a point. These two Italo directors are awesome. I remember seeing one of Wertmueller films “La Fine del Mondo Nel Nostro Solito Letto in Una Notte Piena Di Pioggia” over 30 years ago. It was fabulous.

Besides the obvious directors such as Federico Fellini’s “La dolce vita,” Roberto Rossellini’s “Rome, Open City,” Vittorio De Sica’s “The Bicycle Thief” and Gillo Pontecorvo’s “The Battle of Algiers,” the list includes less-conventional entries such as Marco Ferreri’s “The Ape Woman” about a woman affected with hypertrichosis.

As far as number of films, Fellini leads the list with seven, followed by Luchino Visconti with six, and De Sica, Francesco Rosi and Mario Monicelli with five works each. The list also includes four by Rossellini and three by Michelangelo Antonioni, reported by Variety. Venice Days aims to make these works more readily available to the country’s younger generations. Tough rights issues however still stand in the way.

NBC says ‘Scrub’ Stays

February 29th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Gossip, Idle Speculation, TV

scrubs_abc.jpg‘Scrubs is not moving from NBC to ABC.

Reported by Variety, alphabet net is said to be close to picking up an 18-episode season from sibling ABC Studios of the critically acclaimed Zach Braff laffer.

But if that’s true, NBC Entertainment/Universal Media Studios co-chair Marc Graboff said ABC Studios would be in breach of contract - and would take appropriate legal action.

“NBC has a license agreement with ABC Studios, which includes a right of first negotiation and first refusal to extend the series term beyond this season,” Graboff said. “We’re living under the terms of this license agreement, and we expect ABC Studios to do the same.”

Meanwhile, ABC Studios execs were scrambling Thursday to respond to rumors that a deal had already been done. Studio hasn’t commented on rumors that discussions have commenced between the Alphabet and its sister studio. NBC, on the other hand, believes that it is still in talks with ABC Studios to decide how to resolve the seventh - and what was believed to be the final - season of “Scrubs.”

‘Body of War’ Soundtrack

February 29th, 2008 by Kenna McHugh in Music, Online Videos, Soundtrack

tomasandbrother.gifNew artist Brendan James appearing on the Body of War soundtrack.  A double album filled with politically charged songs, artists like Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder are featured along with Brendan’s “Hero Song,” capturing the message of the Body of War film.

Check out the live performance from Brendan! “Hero Song”

Before you get to songs by the many stars that contributed to the ‘Body of War: Songs that Inspired an Iraq War Veteran’ soundtrack, you hear “Hero’s Song” by Brendan James. James’ ode to our soldiers in Iraq was handpicked by the film’s subject and curator, Tomas Young, as the lead track on the double disc, preceding the likes of Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, Neil Young, Tori Amos, Ben Harper, Serj Tankian and Eddie Vedder.

Tomas Young was wounded during his first week of duty in Iraq, becoming paralyzed from the chest down.  He discovered “Hero’s Song” via Brendan James’ Myspace page and, following a personal phone call between the singer-songwriter and veteran, Young insisted that “Hero’s Song” appear first on the soundtrack.
