Bad Theater Experiences: Has Regal Fixed ‘Em for Good?

May 31st, 2007 by Patrick Keller in Movie News, Technology

Regal Guest Response SystemEveryone has had the experience of having a movie ruined. (By something other than what’s on the screen, that is.) I have vivid memories of seeing Peter Jackson’s King Kong in the theater. Unfortunately, I don’t remember hearing much of it.

Regal Cinemas, however, has found a way to (I hope) put a stop to that.

The company, which owns about 500 theaters (including more than a handful here in Oregon), has introduced the Regal Guest Response System (RGRS), essentially an anonymous tattletale device that allows one randomly selected moviegoer to alert the management of four different infractions: sound problems, picture problems, piracy, and, most importantly, “other disturbances.”

In other words, we now have a way to kick yappers and crying babies out of our movies. Finally! This, my friends, is a cause for celebration. Sure, the device has a lot of potential for abuse, although I’m sure that managers could just take the device away and give it to someone else. But the potential advantages here are enormous. At the very least, it could put some civility back into the theater.

So, here’s two experiences that sprang instantly to mind when I heard Regal was going to begin use of the device in 114 of its theaters. Got any that can top mine? Read on »

‘Revolutionary Road’ Brings Back Famous Couple

May 31st, 2007 by Frank in Actors, Drama, Movies

winsletleo.jpg

‘Revolutionary Road’ has started filming in New York City. The movie brings back the couple that made teenage girls hearts swoon in 1997 as Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet work together for the first time since their ultra-blockbuster ‘Titanic’.

‘Revolutionary Road’ will be a bittersweet film. The couple will show the more gritty side of relationships as the couple deals with growing apart while being married. Set in the 1950’s, they have to endure a troubled marriage for the sake of ‘fitting in’.

The film is based on the book by Richard Yates. The film is directed by Winslet’s husband Sam Mendes who is best known for his work on the film ‘American Beauty”. ‘Revolutionary Road’ is set to be released sometime in 2008.

Harry Potter Fans Have Less of a Wait For New Film

May 31st, 2007 by Frank in Trailers

phoenix3.jpg
The release of ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ has been moved up two days. The movie is now set to debut on July 11th. No reason for the change in date has been given.

Maybe the studios were afraid to release the movie on Friday July 13th. There are already enough kooks out there thinking that Harry Potter is somehow luring kids to “evil”. So maybe they decided to play it safe.

One thing is for sure though, if you’re a movie buff and want to catch the first showing, you better tell your boss now so you are not stuck at work while you could be at the movies having a good time.

Sin City 2 is Coming, But Later Than Expected

May 31st, 2007 by Frank in Movie News

sincitypic.jpg Fans of Sin City will have to wait just a little bit longer before the Sin City 2 gets filming underway. Frank Miller has just confirmed that he and film partner Robert Rodriguez will be working on other projects first.

Miller recently told Rotten Tomatoes that “Sin City 2 is still likely to happen…just not right away. The script is written and Robert and I are raring to go, but it looks like I’m going to be doing The Spirit first and Robert’s going to be doing Barbarella first.”

Once the pair finish up their other projects and decided to get down to business, it appears as though it won’t take too long to get things rolling. Everything is ready to go, and all they really need is to nail down a cast.

Moore to Premiere “Sicko” in Michigan

May 31st, 2007 by Frank in Documentary, Movie News, Movies

Michael Moore’s controversial new film, SICKO, will premiere in Michigan as part of a local Democratic Party fundraiser. The movie will be screened on June 16 at an Antrim County Democratic Party event, which is 13 days before the movie’s nation-wide release on June 29th.

Michael Moore’s wife, Kathleen Glynn, is vice-chairwoman of the organization and helped to organize the fundraiser. She is also credited as the movie’s executive producer.

Moore says, “I’m doing this at my wife’s request. Everyone is invited.”

Should the Republicans feel left out, Michael Moore is willing “to do a screening for any Republican group ready to provide assistance to those having a difficult time making it.” Hmm…somehow I don’t think any will take him up on the offer.

Martin Scorsese “Shine(s) A Light” on the Rolling Stones

May 31st, 2007 by Frank in Directors, Documentary

rollingstones.jpg

Martin Scorsese didn’t say “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” from his latest film. The acclaimed director’s new project is called “Shine a Light” and takes a look at the Rolling Stones. He took his cameras and a cast that included a virtual “who’s who” in cinematography to document the Rolling Stones 2006 shows at the Beacon Theater in New York City. The film will be released on September 21st nationwide.

It comes as little surprise that Scorsese is a big Stones fan as he uses a number of their songs in many of his hit movies. With the team he has assembled (Director of Photography, Oscar(R) winner Robert Richardson (”The Aviator,” “JFK”), supervised the camera team comprised of several highly acclaimed cinematographers, including Oscar(R) winner John Toll (”The Last Samurai,” “Braveheart”), Oscar(R) winner Andrew Lesnie (”The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “King Kong”), Oscar(R) nominee Stuart Dryburgh (”The Piano,” “The Painted Veil”), Oscar(R) nominee Robert Elswit (”Magnolia,” “Good Night and Good Luck”), Oscar(R) nominee Emmanuel Lubezki (”Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events,” “Sleepy Hollow”) and Ellen Kuras (”Summer of Sam,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”) it sounds like this will be a music/movies fan must see film of the Fall.

Paris, Je T’Aime - Many directions in one destination!

May 31st, 2007 by peter nellhaus in Directors, Indie, Movies, Reviews, Romance

paris-je-taime-poster.jpgThe omnibus film Paris Je T’Aime (Paris, I Love You) is making its way through the art and indie film circuit. Eighteen filmmakers created eighteen short films, each taking place in different sections of Paris. With so many different film artists involved, the quality of the films vary wildly, and some of the films say less about Paris then they do about the interests of the individual filmmakers.

Alfonso Cuaron’s piece says nothing about the section of Paris where it takes place, but is an exercise showing his ability to film a long conversation, Nick Nolte and Ludivine Sagnier, walking and talking. Likewise, Vincenzo Natali’s film about Elijah Wood’s encounter with a beautiful vampire could have taken place in any mysterious location. This is not to say that these respective sequences are bad, or badly made, but that there is little to convey the sense of being in Paris.

More successful is Isabel Coixet’s piece about a man who is about to leave his wife. Coixet seems to channel the spirit of legendary French filmmaker Francois Truffaut, both with the story about love and infidelity, and even including a small portion of the music from Jules and Jim. Coixet’s film includes off screen narration, a man’s voice, that also recalls Truffaut’s classic films.

One director who made a very uncharacteristic piece is Wes Craven. His film is about a young couple, Rufus Sewell and Emily Mortimer as the newlyweds, who rediscover their love for each other at the famed Pere Lachaise cemetery. While the ghost of Oscar Wilde appears briefly, this film is proof that Craven, given the opportunity, can do work that is truly audience friendly.

One the other hand, the Coen brothers film about a hapless American tourist is quite typically a Coen brothers film. Steve Buscemi first is seen in a huge close up, revealed to be looking for the subway. Reading a tour book, Buscemi finds himself causing a gorgeous girl’s boyfriend to be jealous by accidentally making eye contact. The film is a darkly comic look at the most cliched aspects of American tourists in France.

Paris, Je T’Aime ultimately has as many hits as it has misses. It is the kind of film that would have benefitted from either a stricter editing to delete some of the lesser efforts, or perhaps simply having fewer filmmakers with a more unified sense of direction involved.
