Evan Almighty trailer will debut on The Office tonight

March 29th, 2007 by daryl in Movies

Steve Carell, plus guestUniversal are smart puppies. They’ll be airing the Evan Almighty trailer at some point during tonight’s The Office marathon on NBC. It’s smart because Carell fans will be already be watching, but it also marks Carell’s ascendancy from The Daily Show sidekick to blockbustering superstar.

He’s basically the new Jim Carrey, especially as he’s stepping up to essentially replace Carrey in the mini-Almighty franchise. The only difference is Carell hasn’t been in a stinker like The Number 23, yet.

Gives me an idea though: Maybe Universal could keep this whole Almighty thing going by giving different comedians a chance to play God? Maybe Chris Rock next time, maybe Jerry Seinfeld, maybe The Naked Trucker and T-Bones could share duties. Actually scratch that, it’s a terrible idea, except for The Naked Trucker and T-Bones bit.

Be on The Lookout for shady marketing

March 29th, 2007 by daryl in Directors, Movies

The Lookout trailerIf you can cast your mind all the way back to yesterday, you’ll remember me getting all excited about the trailer for The Lookout, Scott Frank’s dierctorial debut. I believe the exact words I used were:

It looks nice and dark

Turns out I was wrong, sort of. While the trailer does indeed look nice and dark, Scott Frank is NOT a happy bunny, because he feels Miramax have misrepresented his film with the trailer and poster (above). He told Slashfilm:

We HATE the trailer. The trailer is NOT the movie, and neither is that (pointing to the poster). All morning I’ve been having chats with the folks at Miramax marketing, telling them that the feedback without question - now we’re laughing because we hear the same thing with every interview people come in and say ‘Boy, I wasn’t even looking forward to seeing that movie because I thought it was going to be this kind of movie, NOT that kind of movie.’ And I keep telling them (Miramax) that. So Thank you, yes you’re right. The trailer, I wish I had more of a say, instead of just a voice in those kind of things.

Bizarrely all this inside out marketing has worked on me. I was interested before, but now I’m fascinated to see exactly what kind of film The Lookout really is.

Kevin Smith Loves Grindhouse

March 29th, 2007 by daryl in Directors, Movies, Reviews

Kurt Russell in Death ProofA quick review of Grindhouse from Clerks director Kevin Smith:

“F***king fantastic. So insanely good. Three hours long, but I’d have sat through it again, had they offered to re-run it. See it as soon as you can,” wrote Smith. “I think, after Sin City, it might be Robert’s best flick to date. Totally fun and really enjoyable. And Death Proof plays like The Sixth Film From Quentin Tarantino. Loved it. F***king loved it.”

Hard to tell, did he like it or not?

Spider-Man 3 Screening at Tribeca Film Festival

March 29th, 2007 by daryl in Festivals, Movies

Spiderman at TribecaThat’s right. Spider-Man 3 -in all its blockbustery glory - will probably be screening as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. Seems a shame to me that such a classy festival has to ruin things by going overboard with a big PR stunt for a film that’s going to make a fortune anyway.

Last year they had Tom Cruise taking all kinds of ridiculous transports to get to the Tribeca screening of Mission: Impossible III, this year they’re possibly having back to back to back screenings of all three Spider-Man films. Maybe they could also have Tobey Maguire swing into the screening using actual spider webs?

Looking Forward to The Lookout

March 28th, 2007 by daryl in Actors, Directors, Movies, Trailers

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the most interesting actors to come along in a while. If you saw his performance in the stylish “school-noir” flick Brick then you’ll agree.

In The Lookout he plays a once promising high school athlete (looks like he played hockey from the trailer) who’s potential career is ruined in a car crash (a la Unbreakable) which leaves him emotionally and mentally damaged. When he takes a job as a janitor at a bank, he gets embroiled in a fellow former students plan to rob said bank.

It looks nice and dark, and though there isn’t any trace of humour in the trailer it seems impossible that Scott Frank - screenwriter behind Out of Sight and Get Shorty, making his directorial debut - will fail to deliver a few smart zingers.

The Simpsons angry mob

Don’t know about you but I’ve been a little nervous about The Simpsons Movie. Can’t ever remember so desperately wanting a movie not to fail, and for the sake of those responsible as well as my own enjoyment.

So good news today that someone over at AICN has seen a rough, early edit and posted up a review of the work in progress. Edited highlights below:

Eddie Griffin wrecks million dollar car -here come the jokes!

March 27th, 2007 by peter nellhaus in Actors, Movies

Eddie Griffin: car crasherBy now you may have read about Eddie Griffin’s little mishap on the set of the film Redline. For those who missed it, the undercover brother was practicing on Monday for a charity race when he totalled the rare Ferrari Enzo worth one and half million dollars.

The car was owned by by Redline executive producer Daniel Sadek. The upcoming film features the exotic cars from Sadek’s collection, minus one thanks to Griffin. Griffin was uninjured. Said Sadek, “I went to my trailer for about 15 minutes and I thought,`There’s people dying every day. A lot of worse things are happening in the world.”

It is unknown at this time if Griffin wiped out his salary along with the car. The incident was caught on video, so hopefully we can see Eddie Griffin’s version of Crash on YouTube. One thing for sure, Griffin will probably not be up for consideration if there’s a remake of Driving Miss Daisy.

Turistas DVD Review: The Travel Channel’s worst nightmare.

March 26th, 2007 by aaron in Dvd, Movies, Reviews, horror

TuristasI myself have been to a few countries around the world. I also plan on visiting a great deal more. However, I will not be frequenting any hostels of any kind nor will I be bussing through South America. I’m sure there are some fine hostel establishments in Europe and I’m confident there are some quaint villages in Brazil. I’m an optimist. Although, after seeing Hostel and eventually Turistas, I’m a little afraid of being butchered to bits for the enjoyment of others. Maybe it’s just me.
