How to Make Friends by Telephone
Scott Steffens of weblog Contact Sheet has scanned in an instructional etiquette booklet from the 1940s designed to help get one through the hardship of telephone communications.
"Be sure it’s clear to the person to whom you are talking that the conversation is finished. Then replace the receiver gently. A receiver banged down may seem like slamming the door in someone’s face."
The cartoons and tone used in it reminded us instantly of the "welcome to The Internet" package we got from our ISP in 199-whatever.
