The Meaning of Liff
Most of the book by Douglas Adams and John Lloyd, boiled down to text and on the web. The Meaning of Liff is a collection of the names of slightly obscure locals, which, as they're words mostly going to waste, get re-purposed into capturing unexpressed little events. For example:
NUBBOCK (n.)
The kind of person who has to leave before a party can relax and enjoy itself.WHAPLODE DROVE (n.)
A homicidal golf stroke.YARMOUTH (vb.)
To shout at foreigners in the belief that the louder you speak, the better they'll understand you.JAWCRAIG (n. medical) :
A massive facial spasm which is brought on by being told a really astounding piece of news. A mysterious attack of jawcraig affected 40,000 sheep in Whales in 1952.
VOBSTER (n.)
A strain of perfectly healthy rodent which develops cancer the moment it enter a laboratory.
-- in later editions it was explained these definitions came about with these two fucking great comedy writers getting increasingly drunk on a beach passing notes to each other scribbled on cocktail napkins. Dunno if that's reality or a wishful reality, but it sounds about right. This collection is missing quite a few words as the much larger "The Deeper Meaning of Liff" would become the defacto Meaning of Liff. If you see the book in real life, pick it the hell up; it murders a long car or plane ride like nothing else.
