Forest Grove

Maya Churi's Forest Grove is one of the more interesting things we've seen: a Flash animation composed of photographs of models, presented like a slide show-- except when it breaks those rules to be something else for the sake of storytelling. Accompanied by a serene audio track of narration and a sparse sound bed, the end result feels like watching old home movies while in a spaceship that is in hyperspace or something equally physics-defying.

A little swell Flash hoodoo at the Fabrica site allows you to make short flipbook-style animations. Make your squiggles, and send them to a galley where they will be used to give poor children in third world countries brain- destroying seizures. Many attempts seem to end in random violence, but few lack the attention to detail shown in Tamagotchi Pooping.

ActionAid, part of the Make Poverty History initiative, offer up a a viral bit of interactive Flash in the vein of the Subservient Chicken and the Beer.com Virtual Bartender ladies, only here you're puppeteering the members of the upcoming G8 summit. The who are the G8 page has individual action tips you can suggest for the various specific leaders. Not all that much fun, honestly, but a sort of cute death knell to a badly wheezing marketing gimmick, and a fine way to learn about a worthy cause, without having to endure any Bono.

You know that toothless guy at the DMV wearing the sleeping bag that smells like bacon who gives you the thousand yard stare while wiping nervously at something crawling up his leg? This Flash site is your big chance to make those somethings, while listening to a pleasant musical background. After you make your drug trip critter a reality, you can then mail it to your fiends. Ragdoll

When we see Anne Heche speak, we picture exactly what is happening in this Flash going on inside her head... and then we think the tiny homunculus Anne Heche also has this going on in her head, backwards on and on into infinity. Then we eat a bowl of uncooked brownie mix and stare at our hands for a while.

Anyway, this Flash is called Ragdoll, you can manipulate the figure with your cursor, and it is but one of many amazing interactive Flashes at the Pekkas and Borg portfolio site.

The Stone of Anamara is a pretty entertaining point and click style Flash exploration game. In the game, you're a convict on the run, and so you hide out in what appears to be abandoned asylum, haunted with ghosts and bad experiments, where you try ultimately to get out.

The Physics Evolution

A cute interactive Flash animation which gives you a breezy trip through the history of physics. Click the icons to read thumbnails on the major figures and their contributions to the field. Then they show you how to build a woman. Ha ha! They don't really show you how to build a woman. Still good, however, and you can fake like you know something about physics provided you feign irritation with the person you're speaking with quickly enough to change subjects.

The Virtual Magic Kingdom

The Virtual Magic Kingdom is "a free online multi-Player game that lets you experience the awesome magic of Disney Theme Parks from home." You get to drive around a little Stor Troopers style pixel crunched avatar in sets based on the theme park's various attractions. Still in Beta, but so far it seems fully functional.

Moovl

Moovl is a drawing program created with Processing aimed at children in which their creations exist in a rudimentary physics simulator that creates Loony Tunes-like versions of gravity and friction for the animated creatures dreamed up in its environment. An addictive test version of Moovl is available, it's small and runs in your browser (needs Java). Endlessly amusing, however the critters will wink out of existence when you quit in the demo version,which will either upset sensitive kids, or allow them a first step into the dank world of nihilism, depending on your parenting style.
