After many months of being able to search videos loaded online, and a couple of months of accepting video uploads, Google is now making those user-submitted videos public, and offering a in-browser video playback plugin based on the (open source!) VLC player with which to view them. John Battelle’s Searchblog goes into useful detail:
“…this is a big deal for many institutions which do not have the ability to host and stream their own video, but would very much like to get their message out. In essence, Google is providing their infrastructure free of charge to let anyone upload video and have it be found.”
