Defcon: Everybody Dies

ss_preview_1.jpg

Over at Game Videos there's the first gameplay footage of Defcon, the new multiplayer nuclear war simulator from Introversion Software. Their last game was Darwinia, a game I thought was high on retro vector style and low on substance but Defcon looks great. What sounds particularly entertaining is the Office Mode, where the idea is that you and a couple of your friends start a game in the morning and the whole thing runs in what is essentially, real time. When your boss rolls into your cube to ask where your TPS report coversheet is you hammer the escape key twice and the game shrinks to an icon in your system tray which changes to show events like Kevin from accounts breaking your alliance and shooting down your jet squadron because he thought you were scouting out his missile locations because he thought YOU were going to break the alliance.

It all sounds like the kind of healthy paranoia that playing Introversion's first game, Uplink used to instill in me whilst I played it past 4am, drinking Red Bull and not blinking.

Pick Yer Poison, Maryland

Political video blog Cinemocracy returns with a collection of videos only slighter harder to watch than that part of Jackass where the guys self-apply paper cuts to their scrotums or mothers or whatever. We didn't watch that bit very closely, to be honest.

"Today, Cinemocracy brings you the truly awful campaign ads set to abuse the poor voters of Maryland as they prepare to chose their next United States Senator. Democrat Paul Sarbanes will retire at the end of his current term, leaving eight candidates vying to replace him. Their videos, to be kind, suck. Here are three of the worst."

They ain't kidding, click and see:
