Halo movie announced!

Haha!

By now even some remote Pygmy tribes of South Africa know about it, seriously, just check out the picture of The Chief doing some early promo rounds over there.

The, somewhat, fresher news is that a director has finally been picked for the flick. A certain canuck called Neill Blomkamp. The thing is, no one knows a damn thing about that guy. Well, some people do I'm sure, but a lot of us don't. A quick blurb I found on the Spy Entertainment website:

A new breed of director, Neill Blomkamp has harnessed the powers of technology, art and creativity to bring the world imagery never before possible. Garnering his exceptional CG skills in an intelligent and specific manner, his forte is creating pure photo-real visualizations of concepts that not only can't be photographed, but exists only in his imagination. more

I have a Chris Cunningham sorta vibe when I read that description. A more accessible, less twisted and digital Cunningham, but I definitely feel a connection.

I had seen the amazing Citroen C4 spots, but I had no idea it was he who did them. Just in case you've been living under a rock, here is one of them.

You can find another one here.

They both give you a pretty good idea of what the guy can do, but if you really want to get a feel for him, you need to watch his Short Film: Alive in Joburg. I could embed the movie in the page, someone converted it and put it up on YouTube, but I'm a purist, and this is a the type of thing that needs to be seen at the highest possible resolution.

The download is ridiculously slow, due to the fact it's on Archive.org, but it is well worth the wait.

For those of you in a hurry, I'm certain that a YouTube search would turn something up. Mostly because I've tried it for myself.

Although I always regarded the Halo gameplay as a sort of FPS for Dummies (/me braces for the hate mail), the story, reminiscent of my favorite sci-fi author's work, Iain M. Banks, is perfectly suited for an amazingly screenplay.

Eh, did I mention he was Canadian just like me? Don't you forget it eh!

He's South African, actually.

I wonder if they'll run into budget problems and the movie will end up being voiceovers of a bunch of people playing halo3 running around on xbox live. That would be rad.

I would love to see that wohho.

Rick, you seem to be right. According to IMDB he was born in South Africa.

I got my info here:http://spyfilms.com/directors.asp
