DVD Releases for the Week of 8/14/06

Unless you’re one of those Obsesssive Compulsive types whose object of your mental illness is collecting DVDs, this week has some slim pickings. We look at RV, Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector, Hoot, and Scary Movie 4.

First up is RV starring Robin Williams and directed by Barry Levinson. Recently Williams has admitted to falling off the wagon. Could it have something to do with this flat yet weirdly colorful comedy? (Seriously, the photography on this picture looks like it was shot on a sound stage at Willy Wonka’s factory.) Freeze frame on the scene where a Williams is covered with a shit shower and decide for yourself.

Will Larry the Cable Guy utter the phrase “Getherdone!” in the vehicle Larry the Cable Guy:Health Inspector? I guess you’ll have to rent it to find out! Is it worth the cost to your wallet? Or to your soul? (Answer: no.)

Hoot follows the story of a group of youngsters (a gang, if you will) looking to save an adorable endangered owl by pulling all sorts of tomfoolery (read: crimes) to the mean old land developer. Look for a guest appearance by Mr. Margaritaville himself Jimmy Buffett. Based on a popular children’s book, but you’d probably be better off renting Holes. Actually you’d probably be better off not having kids, but hey, looks like that bridge has already been crossed if you’re thinking of renting friggin’ Hoot.

The Scary Movie franchise returns with Scary Movie 4 featuring parodies of The Village, Saw, The Grudge, and War of the Worlds. With David Zucker on director duties, this movie manages to pack in quite a few laughs. It’s taken two movies, but the bitter aftertaste of Scary Movie 2 is finally gone. By the way, is it weird that Anna Faris is hotter than Sarah Michelle Gellar, whom she’s spoofing?

Comments

Look, I understand you have to take a new editorial direction with Screenhead. Obvs, the old art-nerd offerings weren't bringing in the viewers that the site needed to make it profitable.

But can't we at least have a broader look at stuff beyond just movies and video games? If I want movie stuff, I go to IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes. If I want video games, I'll go to Kotaku or IGN. Unless you guys are looking to completely alter Screenhead's daily readers, what you've been doing over the past couple of days isn't going to be enough to keep me coming back.
